Title: | Hogans BB, Barreveld AM, eds. Pain Care Essentials | Authors: | Carr, DB | Keywords: | Book review Pain Management |
Abstract: | Starting with its title and cover art, this modestly sized paperback combines unusual degrees of innovation, subtlety, and clinical acumen. The co-editors, with respective backgrounds in neurology and anesthesiology, are international leaders in interprofessional (IP) pain education. They co-edit the section on education and training of Pain Medicine. Consistent with their IP perspective, they begin the volume with an obituary of the UK’s Dame Cicely Saunders: “trained first as a nurse, then as a medical social worker, and later as a physician.” Next comes the Foreword by Judy Watt-Watson of Canada, a renowned nurse educator and pioneering architect of IP pain education in North America and worldwide. Thus, its first few pages set the stage for conveying a comprehensive IP approach to pain assessment and treatment. This approach was informed by both co-editors’ longstanding efforts to advance pain education, particularly those by Dr. Hogans at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Both Drs. Hogans and Barreveld continue to teach a broad range of health care trainees in their respective institutions through novel educational curricula and experiential learning. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/11055/1024 | ISSN: | 1526-2375 |
